Settling down in Canberra Town

Things are afoot in Canberra, and I feel a need to document them.

Anyone who has allowed even the smallest fraction of their attention to drift towards the arts scene here in Canberra can probably tell you that things are happening. I only recently found myself relocated here and I'm overwhelmed by all the activity around me. Wordsmiths, musicians, dancers and performers line the streets and new marvelous works seem to spring forth from the collective art-mind of this city daily. Art is booming, or perhaps 'escalating' is the word we should use.

Behind the scenes however, tensions are high. The rivalry between the guilds of art increase on a daily basis, the rich battlefields of the You Are Here festival are about to open, and right into the middle of all of this fuel, the Benevolent Ministry of Art are preparing to dropping a potential nuke in the form of the newly revised 'Doctrines of Acceptable Art'.

As an art fan, and even more so a fan of the arts scene, I am literally shaking with excitement - and you should be too.

Conflict creates passion and passion creates art.

I won’t waste time here hypothesising about the Doctrines of Acceptable Art here, at least not until the BMOA make a proper public statement, but it is worth mentioning the debate over what threat, if any, unacceptable art poses to Canberra grows more heated every day. It'll be interesting to see if the You Are Here program makes it through unscathed.

Also of note are the recent rumors of controversial artist and producer T-Bone returning to Canberra after his mysterious exile following the previous You Are Here festival.

Of course these are only rumours at the moment but please allow yourself the guilty pleasure of believing them for a bit.

Now try and imagine exactly how the infamously volatile T-Bone and his cronies are going to react to the BMOA telling them what is and is not acceptable art.

You can see it right?

Isn’t it beautiful?

Make sure you keep checking back here regularly. I'll keep you up to date with all that's really going on in the Canberra art scene. Also, if you're Twitter savvy the place to get the latest seems to be the #artctrl hashtag.
